“This Is Us,” the highly anticipated debut movie by international sensation One Direction, finally hit theaters Aug. 30, topping the box office at #1 with $15.8 million.
The movie follows band members Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne through their journey from small town boys trying out for X-Factor to superstars selling out worldwide arena tours in minutes. It is complete with behind the scenes looks at what it’s like to be on tour, glimpses into the boys’ more personal lives when they aren’t being chased by millions of screaming fans and the paparazzi, and plenty of shirtless moments.
Director Morgan Spurlock and producer Ben Winston did a fantastic job of capturing what One Direction is really all about. Often times, the media portrays the band as one taken over by fame. However, in “This Is Us,” there is nothing more unmistakable than the fact that the boys are attached to their humble beginnings and couldn’t be more grateful for being able to live their dream.
As Tomlinson said, “We’re not perfect, we’re not clean cut; we’re trying to be ourselves,” and the movie embodies that quote perfectly.
There was never a moment in the movie where I felt bored or uninterested. Between laughing at whatever antics the boys were up to now and their goofy remarks to one another, shedding tears during the softer moments of the film and beaming out of pride when their faces lit up the screen, “This Is Us” kept me glued to my seat– so much so that when the 95 minutes were over, leaving the theater and parting ways with the movie was almost impossible.
The film also features the band’s latest single, “Best Song Ever,” which peaked in the top ten in 29 countries.
One Direction never fails to make their fans happy, and “This Is Us” was the perfect way to thank them for all they’ve done. “For those of you who have stuck with us, we’d like to say a big thank you. We’re just normal guys, this isn’t easy, and we are all still learning every day,” Payne said.
From seventeen year old hopefuls to global phenomenons, One Direction is constantly impressing me with their passion, drive and talent (and we can’t forget about those looks), and “This Is Us” only made me love them even more.

I am now a One Direction fan. One Direction is the only direction.
