Every year, a new romantic Valentine’s day movie comes out to make the theaters the perfect date spot. This year’s movie was The Vow starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum and directed by Michael Sucsy. It is based on a true story.
The Vow is about a happy couple, Leo (Tatum), and Paige (McAdams), who get into a car accident that causes Paige to experience a selective memory loss. She cannot remember anything about Leo or their life together; her last memory is of being engaged to her ex-fiance, Jeremy, played by Scott Speedman, whom she has fallen back in love with. Now Leo has to make Paige fall back in love with him.
The story of this movie is very interesting since it relates to actual events. However, the way the plot is structured does not do the story justice. The plot goes way too fast, causing certain events to get left out. Since details are not given, most of Leo’s actions come off as cheesy or over the top, such as when he is exiting his recording studio and says a very cliché line to his assistant, or when he asks Paige out on a date.
True, the movie in general is cute and made me almost cry at certain events, such as when Paige tells Leo that they shouldn’t be together, and that it would be better for her to remain between people and in an environment that she was familiar with. However, it did not nearly match The Notebook or Titanic.
The film’s ending is the most disappointing part, since it comes too quickly and is unsatisfying. It is not even the romantic happy ending that one expects. Instead it shows more of slow progress. The movie is simply too dramatic for the ending.
Out of five stars, The Vow deserves about a 2.8, since it is a very cute, touching movie. If you enjoy chick-flick romances or are a fan of Tatum and McAdams, and do not have high expectations, then you should watch this movie.
