Adapted into a film comes best selling novelist Nicholas Sparks’ Safe Haven, which hit theaters Valentine’s Day.
The story centers around the life of Erin Tierney, played by actress Julianne Hough, who is trapped in an abusive marriage. When the oppotunity comes knocking, Erin escapes. She cuts her hair and starts anew as “Katie.” Katie seeks shelter in the small town of Southport, North Carolina. Upon arriving, Katie meets widower Alex (Josh Duhamel) and Jo (Cobie Smulders), a reserved woman much like herself.
Despite her misgivings, Kate lets her guard down and begins to open up to her new community as well as Alex and his two children. As Katie forms a new life in this small, welcoming town, her husband continues his never ending search to get her back.
Through flashbacks, we see Katie’s former life and her struggles to escape. After being nearly strangled, Katie stabs her husband in self defense and flees. The continuous flashbacks throughout the film build suspense as well as apprehension in the audience.
Overall, I believe this film was well made and is certain to draw some interest. With a surprising, twist ending that’s sure to attract and engage the audience, this movie is definitely one not to miss. This film takes you on the heart wrenching journey of Katie’s desperate attempt to forget the past which haunts and threatens her. Love is Katie’s only true safe haven.
