After two years, Niles North Korean Club has returned as one of the many clubs open to students after school. Sponsored by Nancy Cho, and Sharon Kim, who is the co-president, their goal is to inform students about different aspects of Korean culture.
“Obvioulsly anyone is is welcome to join, but it’s [Korean club], is a place to just learn more about Korean culture. Everyone just thinks its’s [Korean culture] it just like kpop, music, and K dramas, but there’s a lot more to Korean culture than that, and that’s what I want to show people through this club,” Kim said.
For Ms. Cho, sponsoring this club was very important to her. “I always feel very connected to my own culture,” Ms. Cho said. “I grew up in Korea. I came to the states when I was in middle school, so I always wanted a Korean club.”
Every other Tuesday Korean club meets in the skyloft where they hold many different crafts and activities. Last meeting, students learned how to write their name in Korean, and make mini shrinky dinks.
Although new, members can’t wait until future meetings to continue sharing different aspects of Korean culture. Future meetings are going to be filled with traditional clothing, Korean drumming, games, and one that members are most excited about, sharing traditional foods.
Whether you are interested in learning about a new culture, or you want to connect to others who share the same culture as you, stop by Korean club one day after school.
