This past weekend, Skokie rounded up the community for its annual downtown summer street festival. Backlot bash caters to the interests of everyone, including their large carnival midway, 5K run, children’s events at the Skokie Public Library, an art show, bingo, Sunday pancake breakfast, and more! The three-day event continues to be one of Skokie’s biggest celebrations of the year.
Headlines like Shelley Miller, Earth, Wind & Fire tribute, and Colby Maddox kept the stage alive throughout the weekend. Vendors lined the streets of Oakton, selling everything from classic funnel cakes to fried pickles. Adolescents spent their time eagerly running around to each ride. The festival consisted of rides friendly for all ages and all comfort levels.
“I liked the rides, they were good,” senior Josce Jelinek said. “The zipper was my favorite.”
Skokie’s backlot bash has been bringing the community together for 17 years! Back in 2007, four local governments and two not-for-profit organizations worked together to shed light on Skokie’s growing downtown area by planning a late summer street festival. Now, this festival is known far and wide in Chicagoland.
As I walked the streets of Oakton this weekend, memories flooded my mind. I have been going to Backlot bash with my family and friends for as long as I can remember. For the longest time, this festival was the highlight of my summer. The perfect way to end things off and start a great school year. I’m sure this is a common experience for the people of Skokie.
