On March 8, Science Olympiad team received 5th place at the Illinois Regional competition. Due to their achievement, they will now be competing in States on April 12.
Science Olympiad competes against other schools in various science and engineering topics. It covers different subjects such as forestry, fossils, building and air trajectory, and so much more. In total there are 23 different events that students can participate in.
2021 was the last time a team at Niles North has made it to states. Because of this, the team is even more excited than ever. President of the team, Tiba Al Taweel shares her pride for the team.
“It’s been absolutely incredible to be finally going to state after four years of not going,” Al Taweel said. “I’m really proud of everyone on the team, everyone’s effort to score 5th in regionals, and now we’re heading to state.”
Although having made it to state before, the team has never made it to Nationals. Now that this year has proven a strong team, they are hoping to be the first group to make it to Nationals. Overall there is a lot of hope for the team. They have shown lots of dedication to all events and will only continue to grow.
If you’re interested in anything science related, Science Olympiad may be the place for you. It allows you to enter a collaborative space with other people with similar interests. It may also be a place where you can learn about a new interest you didn’t even realize you had.
“Everyone is welcome to join…I think it’s a wonderful place to explore your interests, but it’s also a wonderful place to show colleges that you’re interested as well,” Taweel said.
Make sure if you see any member of the team, wish them good luck at State! Also don’t forget to follow Science Olympiad on Instagram @nnscienceoly for more updates. Congratulations to the team and everyone who received a medal at regionals.
