Niles North’s Multicultural Student Achievement Network (MSAN) creates a way for eighth graders to smoothly transition into high school, with a special focus on an inclusive and equitable experience.
MSAN’s initiative is focused on providing eighth grade students with the tools and information they need to succeed at Niles North. This program is aimed to strengthen connections between North and its feeder schools, making sure all students, regardless of background, have the access to the same resources and opportunities.
By offering a wide range of programs, including informational sessions, workshops, and mentoring opportunities, MSAN is ensuring that all eighth graders have access to the information that will help them thrive once they arrive at North. These efforts aim to make high school feel more accessible to students who feel disconnected or apprehensive.
“I like that it’s student-led because you can feel like you’re really making an impact and [you enjoy doing] something that you know a student would like or soon would need,” junior Rylee Reyes said. “I think that’s also a nice part of MSAN.”
This year, MSAN has participated in numerous field trips, including workshops and panels as part of their journey. They’ve also visited feeder schools working directly with future freshmen on a one-on-one basis.
One of the most powerful aspects of the program is focused on equity. MSAN seeks to break down the barriers that often prevent students from fully participating in school life, whether it’s a lack of information, difficulty accessing resources, or simply feeling out of place. By offering students an understanding of the high school experience, MSAN ensures that they feel more confident, prepared, and supported.
“I really like the space that it builds for students,” junior Uruj Hazara said. “I think that it’s different from other leadership opportunities and I think that it provides a social palace for students, especially people of color and to understand how our district works and how we can make the district better based on our needs and what we’re looking for here.”
MSAN helps eighth graders transition smoothly into high school by providing resources, mentorship, and fostering a sense of community. The program focuses on equity and inclusion, ensuring all students feel confident and supported as they begin their high school journey.
