Kinda Pregnant is a 2025 comedy film featuring Amy Schumer as Lainy Newton, a 40-year-old English teacher who wants nothing more than to be a mother. When her best friend Kate (Jillian Bell) announces her own pregnancy, jealousy overtakes Lainy, leading her to purchase a fake baby bump and dive head-first into exploring the world of an expectant mother. This charade becomes quite complicated when she meets Josh (Will Forte) and inadvertently falls for him, all while keeping up with the act. How long can Lainy keep this secret before it all comes crashing down?
Despite the horrific reviews online, I found the movie to be slightly entertaining. Amy Schumer is notorious for being cringe-worthy and awkward in her movies. However, I found this style of acting to be interesting because it makes her more relatable and human. Lainy Newton experiences the struggles of insecurities, jealousy, pressure from society, and fear of being left out, all common characteristics people face in the real world and can relate to. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t put Amy Schumer in the Comedian Hall of Fame, but I think she accurately depicts the role of Lainy Newton.
The movie is hands-down lighthearted and a little ridiculous but if we focus on the movie’s themes of friendship, personal growth, and desire for purpose, we can understand the movie’s overall message of self-discovery. Ultimately emphasizing authenticity and accepting life’s unpredictable nature.
I don’t see this movie winning any awards, nonetheless, it inspired a great message promoting self-discovery and acceptance. If you’re ever in the mood for a cheesy and silly movie, this Netflix original might be the perfect fit for you.
