Eusexua “is a feeling of complete presence,” FKA Twigs explained in a sit-down interview on influencer Jake Shane’s podcast Therapuss. “Eusexua” isn’t a real word in the English language; FKA Twigs made this word up by herself. The artist explained that she was most easily able to access the feeling of Eusexua at raves and clubs, which seems to be a theme that her hyper-pop, electronica beats of Eusexua follow.
While Eusexua’s songs emit obvious sensuality and flirtation, there are undoubtedly undertones of healing and profound self-awareness. While listening to techno music like Eusexua, I don’t expect much from the lyrics. I understand that crafting these futuristic masterpieces is art in itself, and don’t anticipate the same heart-wrenching authenticity I get from Taylor Swift’s quill, fountain, or glitter gel pens.
But I should’ve known that FKA Twigs would take it there, as she always does.
In songs like Girl Feels Good and Perfect Stranger, FKA Twigs conveys an empowered approach to pleasure and fun. “Your mother’s, sister’s lover’s heart is where there’s healing/When a girl feels good, it makes the world go ‘round.” These lyrics are refreshing in the male-dominated world of music. Rather than hearing male rappers brag about non-consensual sex, FKA Twigs exposes us to an empowering and upbeat anthem about the power of a woman and the pleasure she feels.
Another standout on Eusexua is Drums of Death. On the first listen, I actually didn’t love it. I thought it was too electric and went a little over my head. On the second listen, however, I not only found the music to be cool and different, but the message to be exciting and unapologetic. “Shed your skin/Rip your shirt, the flesh exposed” Eusexua is an album with themes of healing at its core. Drums of Death emulates the bashful, not-so-pretty, authentic nature of healing. This seemingly too-intense form of healing is just as important, if not more, than the more palatable or prettier forms of healing we are used to.
This album is extremely special, centering on aspects such as bottled-up emotions, vulnerability, sensuality, and human connection. Those who enjoy Eusexua will love BRAT by Charli XCX, Desire, I Want To Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek, and Post by Björk.
