As the Vikings gear up for an action-packed rivalry week, it was announced by Niles North Athletic Director Brett Bildstein that Viking star center Hunter Gawon will be honored pregame of Tuesday’s match-up against 25th-ranked Evanston.
Gawron reached this milestone in December 2024 against Maine West, joining Nick Williams, Malachi Nix, Abdel Nader, Crishawn Cook, Damaria Franklin, Aquan Smart, Jalen Butler, Yaris Irby, and Reid Olson as the tenth member of the Niles North 1000 point club in just two and a half years on varsity.
Gawron has been involved with Niles North athletics since his freshman year, starting off playing baseball, but since his sophomore year, he’s been a force on the court and has been recognized for it.
“[Gawron] came in as a baseball player,” Athletic Director Brett Bildstein said. “He’d probably be outstanding at track or football if he chose to, but he has devoted himself to basketball, and obviously you see, from [scoring 1000 points], it has paid off. I would say one of the biggest things I’ve seen is [that] Hunter has a huge growth in maturity and leadership.”
The ceremony will take place on Jan. 14 in the main gym at around thirty minutes before tip off at 6:30 pm, which will be followed by the varsity game against Evanston.
