Agatha Harkness, who you may know from the infamous Kathryn Hahn winking meme, is getting her own nine episode series, Agatha: All Along, on Disney+. The series starts with a two episode premiere on Sept. 18, continues with a subsequent weekly release on Wednesdays, and end with a two episode closer on Oct. 30. Agatha: All Along is the successor to WandaVision, which was rated as the second best Disney+ show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with a rating of 7.9/10 on IMDB and a 92% on the Tomatometer
If you want to understand the many intricacies of the show’s nods and references, you should watch all of the following projects: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
But if you don’t want to have to watch nearly 17 hours of screen time, just to get all caught up for the new show, then I’d recommend jumping straight to WandaVision and catch just those last two on the list, as those directly set up Agatha: All Along.
But who is Agatha Harkness? In the comics, Agatha Harkness is a witch who has been around for centuries. Though her age is unknown, she has participated in several historic events in U.S. history. She was persecuted during the Salem Witch Trials. She taught magic to the Daughters of Liberty during the American Revolutionary War. She was recruited for the Department of the Uncanny in WWII to help fight a Nazi Witch named Hilda von Hate. She even mentored the Scarlet Witch in the mystic arts.
So what does all this mean for Agatha in the MCU? After the events of WandaVision, Agatha finds herself trapped in an illusion spell for three years. Instead of the powerful witch Agatha Harkness, she sees herself as Agnes, a disgruntled and tired detective for Westview’s police department. After being made aware of the spell and breaking free into reality, she assembles her own coven of witches to walk the Witches Road, a mystical dimension that only witches can access, in an attempt to regain her power.
What does Agatha: All Along mean for the future of the MCU? Joe Locke, who is reported to play “Teen” is almost definitely going to be portraying Billy Kaplan-Altman, more commonly known as Wiccan. Wiccan is one of Scarlet Witch’s two twin sons, Wiccan and Speed, the former of which possesses similar magical capabilities to his mom. His inclusion in this show helps pave the way for the MCU’s depiction of the young avengers, of which several other members are already well established, including Hailee Steinfeld’s olympic-level archer, Kate Bishop, and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel, who creates energy constructs.
As for Agatha Harkness herself, there is certainly room for her on a potential roster of The Midnight Sons, which is a team of occult characters featuring sorcerers and monsters alike. We may get the chance to see Agatha team up with the likes of Dr. Strange and Wong, Moon Knight, and even Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing (or Ted as he is referred to in the Werewolf by Night special on Disney+)
Agatha: All Along is shaping up to be a fun, kooky, wild ride. Whether you love all things Marvel, or you’re just a fan of Kathryn Hahn’s eccentric personality, Agatha: All Along is sure to be an entertaining experience. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your own coven of witches and wizards to watch alongside you.
