In the early hours of the morning on Friday, Sept. 7, Niles North student athletes filed into the Main Gym. All fall sports were represented: namely, Girls’ Flag Football, whose Head Coach Karin Wick was the first to be interviewed by Fox 32 Chicago’s Joanie Lum on their Orange Friday program.
“It’s been amazing… I’ve never had so much fun and the girls have never had so much fun” she said of the season before giving Lum a Niles North Flag Football t-shirt.
Davone Robinson was next to be interviewed, speaking about the Football team’s preparation before their eventual loss to the Leyden Eagles, 14-6. This preparation, as Lum noted, included the Orange Friday event. “It shows the school supporting us,” he noted.
Julian Donegan of the cheer team then elaborated on school spirit, being happy to “cheer for the [Football] boys, and in the winter we help to raise school spirit by bringing in our own titles.” Donegan was especially proud of the team’s 13th place performance at the Illinois High School Association State Finals last year.
Boys Soccer Head Coach Filip Cejovic was last to be interviewed on the first leg of the Orange Friday segment, citing “our wonderful kids and wonderful leadership… We are all proud to be Vikings.” Those kids, his boys soccer players, cheered loudly in support of their coach.
For the second leg, new Principal Marlon Felton was gifted a commemorative Chicago Bears jersey with his name on it by Football Head Coach Gary Butler on behalf of the Bears organization and Fox 32 Chicago. Amidst chants of “Mr. Felton!,” the principal remarked that “we have around 2,100 students, over 70 languages spoken, and as you can see, we have a lot of positive energy [and] pride. We’re Vikings, and we just keep the positive energy rolling.”
