After eight years of advocacy from student-athletes and professional organizations in Illinois, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) sanctioned Girls Flag Football for the 2024 Fall season. Niles North is one of many local programs participating in this inaugural season and its varsity players have started out strong.
Senior and varsity player Zayjona Pelt claims that the team has been coming together well.
“Our chemistry is our strength,” Pelt said. “It makes us better.”
Physical Welfare teacher and Head Coach Karin Wick agrees, saying, “I had about 20 people come to practice this summer… [and they’re] passionate, dedicated, and they love the game!”
When asked what her favorite part of coaching is, Wick remarked that “the team is so much fun; they come to practice ready to play.”
The team played their first game on Aug. 28 against the Highland Park Giants, a game they won 26-6.
If you missed it, you can catch the flag football team at Chuck Pos Stadium this on Aug. 30, at 5:00 PM, against the Elk Grove Grenadiers.
To those apprehensive, Coach Wick says, “Come and watch, you’ll be hooked!”
