As May rolls in, it marks the beginning of APIDA month (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American Month.) A month where the large and diverse Asian community here at Niles North can celebrate their culture and many successes in the community.
Although May has been designated nationally as APIDA month since 1988, it has only been gaining more prevalence as of late and being celebrated more widely, a testament of the growing unity and progress being established.
Additionally, while having a month recognized to celebrate one’s cultural identity is important, it should be remembered that it isn’t just within that month you are allowed to be celebrated.
Asian American studies instructor Jay Cha expands on why.
“I think it’s always good to have culture appreciated and celebrated, when we delegate a specific month to celebrate-it doesn’t mean your representation only exists within that month.” He adds “It’s nice that we bring attention to and focus on that, especially uplifting the many Asian voices since it’s not a monolith and there’s so many ways to celebrate. It shouldn’t begin and end here in May.”
As we delve deeper into the month, Chicago and the greater areas will be celebrating with a few events sprinkled throughout the month. Northwestern holds more than a handful of events during the second week of May such as APIDA book-talks and APIDA trivia day. Moreover, the Skokie park district will hold a free evening of celebration at Skokie Heritage Museum-where various activities like personal storytelling will be led by Dr. Ada Cheng, a Chicago led storyteller and speaker.
