With an overall record of 4-8, a neutral fan would assume that a team with that record would be discouraged. But the spirits are high on the Niles North Baseball team, as each member of the team has their eye on the future. With a brand new field, and a new team, the team couldn’t be more excited.
In years past, the Niles North Baseball team has struggled against tougher opponents, according to members of the squad. But this year is quite the opposite; the team is getting into close game situations with some of the best teams in the state.
“The (baseball) team has been really great this season,” senior pitcher Mitchell Tuchten said. “We’ve been doing a lot better than years past, and we’ve been in every game we’ve played so far”.
The team has been led by seniors, but also many young shining stars have risen. Sophomore Nico Vasquez and freshman Jacob Wolfinger have been showout players for the team, both showing crazy potential for years to come.
“They both have tons of potential,” senior pitcher Mitchell Tuchten said. “I think they both could definitely go play (Division 1) in the future”.
But it’s not just the young players who are putting in a shift for the squad. On March 28, Junior Jacob Titsworth pitched a complete perfect game in the Vikings’ 10-0 win over Leyden High School.
The seniors on the squad feel confident in the Vikings’ future teams.
“You can see the growth from the baseball team throughout my time at Niles North,” senior manager Andrew Koppe said. “I can tell even after I leave, the baseball team will be in a really good spot”.
Although their record may not show it, the Vikings baseball team have been performing at a very high level for their entire season so far. Their conference run will begin on Tuesday, April 16 against the Niles West Wolves at Niles West. The team hopes their peers will be able to show out and support them.
