Last week, Jurgen Klopp announced that he will not be renewing his contract as Liverpool manager at the end of the 23/24 season, leaving behind a legacy that will be near impossible to top.
Jurgen Klopp joined Liverpool from Dortmund in 2015, brought in in order to save the underperforming club. Liverpool is one of the most prolific teams in terms of history; boasting 19 Premier League titles, eight FA cups, and six UEFA Champions Leagues, but had been underperforming the past few years, even finishing sixth in the Premier League the year before Klopp joined.
However, Klopp didn’t necessarily make an immediate impact. Working with what he had, Liverpool finished 8th place in the 2015/2016 season, causing doubts to be raised about Klopp’s management skills. The following season, though, they placed fourth, thus qualifying for the Champions League.
Since then, Liverpool have only left the top 4 teams once, placing fifth in the 2022/2023 Premier League season. Competing with English giants Manchester City, they even won a Premier League title in the 2019/2020 season. They topped off their success with a Champions League win in 2019, and were even runner-ups to Real Madrid in 2022.
Although he has found nothing but success, Klopp has decided to hang up the towel at Liverpool, and he will retire as one of if not the greatest manager of their history. He decided it was using up too much of his energy, and he needed a break. Following the ending of the 2023/2024 season, Klopp will be out of a job, and Liverpool in need of a manager. Who knows what will happen when he’s gone?
