The Chicago Bears’s this season have left many fans disappointed due to their poor performance and not so good of a record. Many of them are extremely upset with Justin Fields, their star quarterback from the Ohio State University, criticizing him for his poor downfield decision making, also averaging 1 fumble per game this season. What makes things worse for Fields is that he might be subject to trade, as rumors speculate that the Bears will move on from Fields and draft Caleb Williams, quarterback at USC, or Drake Maye, quarterback at UNC, along with many wide receivers to boost their offense. Here’s why the Chicago Bears might regret trading Justin Fields.
Throughout the 8 games that he’s played in this season, Fields totaled 1,587 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, and a 92.3 passing rating. He completed 64.4% of his passes, Fields also managed to run 400 yards and score one touchdown this season. Last season was no surprise either, Fields ran a total of 1,143 yards scored and eight touchdowns.
Fields has been through a lot for his three years on the Chicago Bears, he’s gone through two coaches, two offensive coordinators, and two GMs within those three seasons. He is currently under two regimes who’ve tried to focus on his mobility, which is, no doubt, his best trait as a NFL player. In week three, he made a statement about the coaching staff of the Chicago Bears calling them out for his “Robotic” play. He later apologized to his coaches by saying “I’m not blaming anything on the coaches, I’m never going to blame anything on the coaches, I’m never going to blame anything on my teammates. Whatever happens in the game, I will take all the blame.”
Justin Fields only has one more year left until his rookie contract expires. Although the Bears do have an option if they decide they want to keep him for longer. They could exercise a 2025 fifth-year option that could secure him an extra 20+ million dollars. The Chicago Bears also have the first pick in the 2024 NFL draft, and speculations indicate that they might choose between Drake Maye or Caleb Williams, two star quarterbacks in College Football. However, it would seem illogical to have another rookie start over Justin Fields since he’s still a bit young, at the healthy age of 24.
Although the Bears might not be the strongest team in the NFL, they have much room for improvement and growth. And trading Fields doesn’t seem like the right thing to do since he has many more years left until he retires. Fields has a lot of potential, it’s only a matter of time until the Chicago Bears realize it.
