In 1999, Nas’ came out with his chart topping album, I Am. The plan for this album was to be a two part album titled I Am…The Autobiography, but part of the album was retracted due to there being many leaks, all of them somehow ending up on the radio.
Nas returns with a compelling and self reflection journey through his life in I Am…The Autobiography an album that reflects on the rapper’s evolution, experiences, and the intricate web of emotions that have shaped his career. This album serves as a love letter to Nas’ storytelling prowess and his ability to navigate the intricate intersections of his personal and public life.
The album opens with a track that sets the tone for the remainder of the album, titled Fetus . Nas delves deep into his past, addressing both the triumphs and tribulations that have defined him. The production is a masterful blend of classic boom beats and contemporary elements, providing a nostalgic backdrop for Nas’ poetic lyricism.
Nas tackles social and political issues with the same finesse that has defined his career. This album very easily showcases his ability to comment on the state of the world while maintaining a personal touch. The social commentary is delivered with sharp wit and unwavering confidence, showing Nas’ growth as an artist and a commentator on society.
Overall, this was a hard album to review since I had to find it on SoundCloud, but it was very well worth it and it really shows off the talents of Nas and how much he’s grown as a musician.
