The air buzzes with excitement at Niles North High School as the Vikings boys swimming team eagerly prepare for the upcoming season. The smell of chlorine fills the air as the team members gear up in their sleek swim caps, and gather at the edge of the pool.
“I’m really excited to get our season going this year. We have a lot of new faces joining and it really gives me hope for the future of the program and this season” – Co-captain Senior Jonathan Avram.
The team is truly ready to go as they are coming off CSL North Conference Champions last season. Furthermore, the Vikings had 5 IHSA State qualifiers last season, which included Ryan Martinez (Sr.), Ryan Nguyen(Sr.), Jonathan Avram(Sr.), Matthew Hristov(Gr.), and Nicholas Pham(Gr.).
The Vikings look to embrace a spirit of friendly competition, pushing one another to new heights, using the water as a canvas for their ambitions, each stroke a brushstroke painting a picture of dedication and resilience. The veterans lead by example, imparting their wisdom to the rookies who, in turn, bring in fresh energy and enthusiasm.
The Vikings first meet will be away on Dec. 15th, against Maine South, at Maine South. With co-captains Jonathan Avram and Ryan Nguyen leading the team, the boys look to take their first victory.
Moreso, the Vikings will look to attempt to break the 1:27.29 minute time requirement to qualify for state. Although the swimmers must achieve this time during sectionals, achieving this milestone or getting close to it will definitely boost the team’s confidence when sectionals do come around.
The 2023-2024 boys varsity swim team will be introduced on Dec. 8th at the Pep assembly. Make sure to cheer loud and support the boys as they get ready for a successful season.
