What is your name and your department? Lizbeth Roman, World Language.
What made you pursue teaching Spanish and how long have you been doing it? I’ve been doing it for 9 years and I really loved my Highschool Spanish teacher. I had her for 3 out of my four years and we had the pilot AP class (Language) when I was in Highschool so it was awesome taking it, and I just enjoyed it so much I wanted to pursue that major.
What are some of your hobbies? I like to bake, run, and pretty much anything that’s outdoors.
Your favorite place in the world? Definitely Spain, I studied abroad there and did my masters there so it’s definitely close to my heart and I loved to experience the culture. I’ve also learned so much from their vocabulary.
What’s a movie you could watch on repeat? Mean Girls, it’s just so funny.
Current favorite song/artist? I really like Spanish music, especially Camilo.
Who inspires you the most and why? I think I would say my grandpa, because he immigrated to this country and he definitely faced a lot of discrimination but he got a job and bought properties, and him being able to do that, just knowing all that he did inspired me to pursue my career and focus on making a name for myself.
What do you like about teaching Spanish? I enjoy seeing all the growth from when I have students from the beginning of the year and to the end. Seeing them put together everything they’ve learned, seeing them put together what I taught is such a good feeling, especially their growth from Spanish 1-3 where I can hold a conversation with them.
What are the benefits of learning Spanish? Well It’s definitely one of the most growing languages, and it’s obviously a benefit to know more than 1 language. Also, there’s so many Spanish speaking countries that have so many experiences and stuff, especially if you want to visit places like South America.
Is there anything you want to do differently in your classroom? I would love to be able to incorporate more active activities, I would love for them to be able to cook something and taste it, something interactive that relates to our unit. field trips too, it’s definitely tough to find an opportunity to do that but there’s a possibility of it happening soon.
What do you love about Niles North I love that it’s so diverse. It’s probably the most diverse district I’ve worked in. I learn so much from the students and colleagues and everyone is so nice.
