On Sept. 22, Artist Doja Cat dropped her 4th album “Scarlet” where she introduces a bold new alter ego, and she did this in the most unexpected way.
Doja snatched all the attention when she said all her past albums were just cash grabs and not a true display of her musical skill. Later, she faced backlash for her tweet “I don’t though cuz i don’t even know yall” in response to a fans tweet “I wanna hear you say (I do love you guys) as usual you say to your fans” after she began releasing singles of her “true talent” Doja received criticism from fans for her more provocative and satanic content which we learned was just a publicity stunt/rebirth for her new alter ego and album Scarlet.
Doja opens up the album with “Paint The Town Red,” it has a catchy tune and lyrics but also a message from Scarlet who is a representation of the opposite of the “perfect” celebrity she is expected to be by society. After releasing the first track, all of Doja’s album covers turned red as a display of her moving on from the old Doja.
In an interview Doja said “Seeing all these people unfollow makes me feel like I’ve defeated a large beast that’s been holding me down for so long and it feels like I can reconnect with the people who really matter and love me for who I am and not for who I was,” she wrote. “I feel free.”
One of Doja Cat’s defining characteristics as an artist is her versatility. She effortlessly combines elements of hip-hop, pop, R&B, and electronic music in her songs, which she does in her 13th track “Love Life” where she switches between Rap and R&B exhibiting her prodigious talent.
My top pick in the album has to be “Attention” with the hypnotic melody it ensnares you into holding the replay button, not to mention the lyricism expresses her experience with self love through all the hate she was receiving.
For any fans, she is touring this fall in 2023.
Despite her relatively short time in the spotlight, Doja Cat has already made a significant impact on the music industry. Her ability to blend genres, create viral moments, and maintain a strong online presence has solidified and only expands with her new album Creating a sound that defies easy categorization. This genre-blending approach has allowed her to appeal to a broad and diverse audience.
