On Sept. 15, singer and songwriter Mitski released her 7th studio album. The album features 11 songs which help listeners get a peek inside her mind and on how she expresses the experience of love.
In what Mitski says is her most American album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, she expresses the revolutionary power of love with her intricate mind and lyrics. One such track that hooks you in is “My Love Mine All Mine,” which describes (in simple terms), how love, if nothing else, is ever-present. She combines her emotive singing with intellectual depth to convey an emotion that is simple yet complicated.
She opens the album with “Bug Like an Angel,” where your best American girl incorporates an emotional and beautiful 17-person orchestra. The song explores experiences in life and what makes them beautiful–mistakes, regret, blissful ignorance, and all.
Mitski’s versatility allows her to connect with her audience on a profound level. My favorite song on the album definitely has to be “I Don’t Like My Mind” for the nostalgia it spurs in you when listening to the relatable melancholic lyrics. The album truly feels like a good fever dream.
For any fans of Mitski, she’s going on tour in March of 2024 with a stop in Chicago.
Mitski’s influence on the pop music landscape extends beyond her own discography. She has inspired a new generation of artists to experiment with genre boundaries and to be unapologetically themselves. Her music has resonated with a wide range of listeners, and her impact on the pop music landscape is undeniable. While she may not fit the conventional mold of a pop star, her influence on the genre cannot be overstated.
