Located in the heart of Niles North, The Point is the pulse of the school. Perhaps Niles North’s most vital resource for all students, The Point enriches their skills and guides them to success. From 7:23 in the morning to 4:28 in the afternoon, The Point is bustling with students, student tutors and teachers. This year, the tutoring center has expanded its subjects, now tutoring history and EL, as well as sciences all day.
The Point, given its name due to its center location of the school, is the place to go if a student needs extra assistance on school work. From Freshman English to AP Calculus to civics to chemistry, there is a wide array of subjects tutored in The Point.
Students can access The Point during their study hall and lunch, as well as before and after school. The Point is home to 30 teachers and 80 students of different skills throughout the day
“It’s amazing, it’s free,” Sabina Kukalj said. Kukalj’s daughter also often makes visits to the tutoring center, emphasizing the convenience of the space. “It’s amazing how I don’t have to look for a tutor on the side for her. Plus, it doesn’t take her extra time. She can go study around lunch, early bird, or after school.”
This is the first year that students will find a science teacher in the Point during every period of the day, ranging from biology to anatomy. This is also the first year that students can refer to a history teacher for assistance, as in past years history students were sent to English teachers. Students can request to see a teacher in The Point appointment form.
The Point is one of the best tools that students can utilize for success. Senior Alyna Prucnal is a student tutor, primarily working with math students, as well as some science and English students.
“It’s very beneficial to just go to The Point, where there’ll be people that can help you, especially when you’re struggling,” Prucnal said. “It’s not always the easiest thing to Google the answers and stuff. It’s sometimes so much more beneficial to have someone there walk you through, especially since [the tutee] can ask questions right away.”
Junior Rhea Shin is a frequent tutee and has been tutored in English, math, and science.
“My experience in The Point was very positive,” Shin said. “Both teachers and students have helped me a lot. Being tutored helped me understand my class material and perform better on assessments.”
Though many students may feel intimidated by going to The Point to ask for help from a new teacher or peer, it really can be one of the best experiences and ways to achieve a goal in a class. No judgments, only smiles.
“No one’s there to judge you, no one’s judging,” Prucnal said. “Everyone’s super helpful, super nice. They’re all here for your benefit.”
