While we’re all excited for the classic favorites of fall to come back into our lives (colorful scarves, comfy sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and the feeling of crunching leaves under our feet), some new fall TV shows have proven themselves to be autumn’s newest gems. Here are some favorites of the season so far.
The Mindy Project
Mindy Kaling, who played the hilarious Kelly Kapoor on The Office, is the epitome of sass in this new show; charming viewers one sequined dress at a time. She plays Mindy Lahiri, a successful physician who seems to have everything under control– except for her personal life, that is. This is due to the time she spent studying away in medical school combined with her oftentimes overdramatic (but loveable) personality. If you’re like me and enjoy some divalicious humor, this show is sure to please. Watch Minday Kaling shine every Tuesday at 8:30 central time on Fox.
The New Normal
Society is always changing at a rapid pace and the concept of normality is redefined along the way. This TV series, which aired on Sept. 10, follows a gay couple, David and Bryan, and their journey as they create a family of their own. In their pursuit of having a baby they meet Goldie, a young single mom with dreams of a better future for her and her nine year-old daughter, Shania. This unlikely bunch soon becomes a family, despite Goldie’s grandmother’s initial disapproval. At first, I was slightly skeptical about this show since it seemed predictable and cliche, but after watching more and more, it has definitely grown on me. The humor is light, the message of the show is heartwarming and the racist grandmother, played by Jane Forrest, is quite the comedian. The New Normal airs every Tuesday at 8:30 central time on NBC.
Revolution
While I have never been the biggest fan of science fiction, after hearing some promising reviews about this post-apocalyptic drama, I knew I had to check it out for myself. This show takes place 15 years after a permanent power outage occurs throughout the entire planet, where people had no choice but to adapt to a world without any electronics. It becomes a sort of dystopia, split into villages that are sometimes ruled by tyrannical militia. The series follows the Matheson family who have had no choice but to ditch their iPads and cell phones for a life without their mom (the cause of her death is still unknown) and an occasional sword fight when necessary. The suspense of the show comes from the fact that the Mathesons possess a mysterious flashdrive that holds the secret to why this power outage happened and how the people can get the power back. While I am not completely enthralled with the show yet, I’ll keep watching because of the relevance it holds in modern society (and I always love to watch a good sword/arrow battle). Revolution is on Mondays at 9:00 p.m. central time on NBC.
Go On
A long time ago, I made a promise to myself that I’d watch any show or movie that had any of the FRIENDS cast in it. This vow was especially directed to any show that featured Matthew Perry, or the beloved Chandler Bing, a hilariously witty character and actor. However, after forcing myself to watching several episodes of Perry’s new show Go On, this show has unfortunately become an exception. The TV series focuses on Perry’s newest character, a sportscaster named Ryan King, who is dealing with the loss of his beloved wife. Due to his loss, King is overcome with anger, which he displaces by directing it towards anyone who manages to really push his buttons. He begins group therapy with others who are going through similar devastation and the show captures the bond that this unlikely group of people share and develop through their adventures (one that includes over a dozen cats). Unfortunately, this show just doesn’t cut it for me since I feel like I’ve seen the storyline way too many times, and there’s nothing keeping me invested in the show. I think part of this is due to Perry’s character who, in my opinion, lacks a certain likability. Check this show out yourself by watching Go On Tuesdays on NBC at 8:00 p.m. central.
The Neighbors
This show hooked me after only watching for three minutes or so. The Neighbors is a science fiction sitcom. The series follows the Weaver family who recently moved into a gated community where their neighbors are all inhabitants from another planet. While they are first horrified to discover that their peculiar neighbors are in fact aliens, they try to look at the positive side of things: they have a new beautiful house and these aliens don’t seem to have fatal intentions. My favorite aspect of the show is just how funny the alien characters act; with their programmed English accents to combat the stupidity of the English language, the slime that pours out of their ears when they cry and the fact that they name their children after professional athletes like Dick Butkus and Reggie Jackson. This show is quirky and fun, and I am really hoping it sticks around. Watch it on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. central time on ABC.

Poor Matthew Perry. It seems that he wants to return to TV so badly but can’t find a show with staying power. I watched his show that was new last year, Mr. Sunshine, but the plug was pulled on that one as well so he’s returned with Go On. Hopefully this one will stick. He will forever be Chandler Bing.
