Boys’ tennis ready to smash the new season
On March 1, the boys’ tennis season officially started. The varsity team is looking to have a promising start since five out of the 15 players are experienced seniors. “Tennis means a lot to me because it gives me a chance to work hard and improve myself, which is essential to life.” senior Vasilis Callas said.
The tennis program has finished top three in the CSL (Central Suburban League) within the past five years. Over the past 10 years, there have also been 11 state qualifiers. This year, the team lost a state qualifier, Russell Rosa, but that doesn’t seem to stop the team as most of them are back from last year’s lineup.
“Our team this season is full of underclassmen so first off we want to develop their skills when we seniors are gone. But overall of course our main goal is to win games and be successful this season since five seniors will be leaving including me,” senior Carlos Silvano said. “ I want us to also get closer as a team and get to know each other better as well. If we do that I think it can lead to our season becoming more successful as well.” Though there may be many underclassmen on the team, that doesn’t seem to slow them down as they still set more goals for themselves.
“We’d like to be more competitive in all of our Saturday tournaments and finish in the top three in at least three different tournaments,” Head boys and girls tennis coach Andrew Klamm said. “We’d like to beat Niles West in our rivalry match, which should be a really good one, and then improve to compete tougher with Vernon Hills for third place in conference.” Though the team is still developing and improving, their sights are still on placing high within the conference.
Support boys’ tennis at their next game on April 1, at the Conant Quad at 8:00 am.
