Anthony Codrea, Chess player
What is your name and grade? My name is Anthony Codrea and I’m a junior.
How long have you been playing/in the club? I have been playing for two years now.
What is the best memory you have from this year so far? My best memory was winning my last game at state. The reason was, I was humming “Party Rock Anthem” while beating my opponent which I thought was funny.
What is your favorite part of playing/being in the club? My favorite part about being in the club is the people that are in the club. The sense of community and finding people that also find your hobby fun.
How do you overcome the nerves when you’re about to compete? Usually, I don’t, I just play while nervous. It’s probably not the best thing to do but it works for me.
Would you recommend anyone to try and if so why? Anyone can play chess. The only thing is you have to dedicate time and effort to really get good. But if you’re just doing it for fun just practice a little. Anyone can do it.
What’s been your biggest accomplishment? My biggest accomplishment was last year when our school went 6-1 at state. We tied for second place.
What’s your favorite activity outside of school? I like playing video games. I also like reading. My favorite fiction book is the Aragon series. My favorite nonfiction book is “The Fabric of the Cosmos” by Brian Greene. I like to play Minecraft and Valorant.
What is your favorite TV show? I’m gonna say Breaking Bad.
