Green Council for School Improvement returns to Niles North
After a few years of being discontinued, the Green Council for School Improvement (GCSI) is back and hoping to make an even bigger impact than prior years. GCSI is a district-wide committee at Niles North and West aimed to make the schools more environmentally friendly.
In GCSI, students and staff propose their ideas to the District 219 Board of Education who then decides what is to be funded. Some of these past ideas included refillable water stations, hydroponic activities in classrooms, and recycling bins around the school.
Although the main focus of GCSI is improving our schools, there is a hope that eventually some of these school projects can expand and be helpful to the outside world too. To help make this happen, however, proposals are needed.
To get involved in the GCSI, you can attend the Green Thumbs club, Climate Change club, or just write an email to GCSI club sponsor and math teacher Sean Delahanty ([email protected]).
“The goal for this committee is very broad, but getting students involved is a top priority,” Delahanty said. “Just try something…it takes 5-10 minutes to send an email and the committee will take it from there.”
Lily is a sophomore at Niles North. She is in debate, Mock law trial, and has been in journalism since the beginning of freshman year.

Students! Please consider submitting a proposal to fund a GREEN ROOF at Niles North! Green roofs help insulate the building (so there is less need for furnace-heating or air-conditioning), filter rainwater, purify the air, and make the building more beautiful. Proposals must come from students, and all it takes is a short email to Mr. Sean Delahanty.
