For the past nine years, Fine and Applied Arts teacher Jennifer Page has taught the Guitar class at Niles North.

Everyone is welcome in her class, from beginners with little to no experience to pros. The class teaches and helps students strengthen an abundance of skills, from chords and tabs to learning your favorite songs. For students who don’t own a guitar, it’s not a problem. Every student will be provided with a guitar during class. This class usually consists of Guitar 1 first semester and Guitar 2 second semester. However, it is possible to just jump into second semester Guitar 2.

Senior Jeremiah Kodavatikanti, who is currently in Guitar 2, says that his favorite part of the class is “having a nice time in my day where I can just kind of relax and know that I’m still learning but in a place where I’m comfortable with something that I enjoy doing.”

Senior Marcos Sierra said, “It is a very welcoming sort of class especially if you take Guitar 1 first. You learn pretty much essential things but at the same time you sort of get to have fun with it and it doesn’t feel like a lot.”

Page, who teaches Orchestra as well as Guitar, emphasizes that her favorite part of the class is getting to know the students.

“I feel like it’s a different group of students than I normally teach” Page said. “I normally teach Orchestra where I see the same students usually for four years and Guitar is the one class that it’s different every year and so I love getting to know the new students that are in Guitar.”

Guitar is a great skill for anyone to learn, and this class is an amazing way to start. It’s a fun, hands-on way to incorporate a fun hobby into the school day and have a break from the usual monotonous classwork. So, for any Niles North students thinking about which elective to pick, choose Guitar!
