Auroris breaks into 2022 with Epiphany
Niles North’s dance company, Auroris, performed their latest show, Epiphany, during a live performance on January 20, 21, and 22. Along with in-person performances, the show will also be shown virtually.
“There are nearly 20 different dances in many different styles,” said Niles North teacher and the artistic director of Auroris Annaliisa Ahlman. “Jazz, hip hop, contemporary, Bollywood, and more. I think that audiences will appreciate how the movement, the costumes, and lighting really go together to help each dance tell a different story.”
Like most aspects in modern life, COVID-19 has affected Auroris’s efforts to get ready for the show as Ahlman explains. “Student attendance has been impacted by Covid protocol — if students are not in classes during the day, then they also aren’t at practice, which has posed a challenge for learning dances and working together.”
But that has not stopped Auroris from achieving their goals. “We would have rehearsals every day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays,” says junior Jade Lageune, who is a three-time choreographer for Auroris. “And, sometimes we would have weekend rehearsals where we would grind it out and do everything. That’s just one big piece of our dedication.” Lageune choreographed a piece for Epiphany that is inspired by the movie Burlesque.
Sophomore dancer Amy Huynh commented on what Auroris wants the audience to take from the show. “Because of COVID and everything these past 2 years I don’t think we really had exposure or showing what Auroris is about like how much of a big family we are and I just want to show our dance because we have been working this entire year, day and night. And we have sacrificed so much time to show this one show.”
There have already been positive reactions to Epiphany on their Instagram. “Congrats on your show weekend. Love the costumes!” commented Barrington High School Orchesis on Instagram. Another commented, “This piece was just *chefs kiss*”
