Harvey Weinstein is sentenced to 23 years in prison
Harvey Weinstein, the infamous ex-film producer, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for criminal sexual abuse and 3 additional years for rape.
“23 years. Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for his crimes of rape and sexual assault. I literally cried tears of amazement, gratitude that the justice system has worked on behalf of all of his victims today,” tweeted actress Mira Sorvino. Sorvino was one of the first to speak up against Weinstein when she fell victim to one of his many crimes.
Harvey Weinstein had finally been relocated to Rikers Island jail on Thursday, February 24. He was found guilty of third-degree rape and other criminal sexual acts and was to be immediately moved to Rikers Island jail. But that’s not what happened.
Instead of locking Weinstein up in jail, an ambulance redirected the former movie magnate to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan due to heart palpitations and high blood pressure. Although Weinstein may look fine, the 67-year-old has “significant medical issues,” says his attorney, Donna Rotunno.
According to Associated Press, Judge James Burke had made a judicial request to have Weinstein placed in the North Infirmary Command at Rikers Island. The criminal sex act carries a charge of 4-25 years in jail, while the third-degree assault carries a charge of a maximum penalty of four years jail time.
Weinstein was using a walker during his court trial. Some people remained skeptical of its necessity, thinking that he was using the walker to gain sympathy. In response to this, his defense team explained that Weinstein was said to be going through many other medications and procedures, one of which was to receive shots in his eyes that would prevent him from going blind.
