On January 20, 2016, Disney Channel will be airing a 10 year anniversary special of High School Musical which includes a reunion of the original cast.
Troy Bolton played by Zac Efron is the star athlete at a small-town high school who falls for a nerd, Gabriella Montez played by Vanessa Hudgens, at a holiday karaoke party. When they return to campus, Troy and Gabriella audition for the upcoming school musical. Meanwhile, a jealous Sharpay Evans played by Ashley Tisdale conspires to squelch their chances. The two must struggle to make it to auditions while also meeting their existing obligations to the basketball team and the academic decathlon.
“Knowing High School Musical premiered 10 years ago makes me feel old,” said Maia Sepiashvili, senior.
The special will include the movie itself, as well as segments of cast members Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Lucas Gabreel, and Monique Coleman discussing the movie together.
“Seeing the cast back together again reaffirms what made it special 10 years ago,” said Gary Marsh, Disney Channels Worldwide president and Chief Creative Officer. “Ten years later, the movie continues to delight audiences around the globe…”
Wait, what about Zac Efron? you might be asking yourself. What about Troy Bolton? Well, Efron couldn’t make it to the reunion, but he has a taped message for the special.
“He’s a main character, so it’s kind of a bummer that he won’t be there,” Sepiashvili says. “But most of the other actors aren’t as active in the movie business as he is.”
