Need I say it? In case you didn’t know, there will be major spoilers in this review. So if you haven’t seen the movie and would like to keep the plot a secret until then, I suggest you click away now.
Now on to the review. This movie stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard. The idea of the movie as that there is a new currently undiscovered virus spreading around Beijing from one sole man. It is soon discovered that the virus takes the host through a sort of like super flu, ultimately making them lose their sense of vision. It also effects their brains, making them slowly into mindless zombie type humans which gets them into trouble, because they can’t look out for what they do or where they go. The first person was killed shortly after infection by walking in front of an incoming bus without even realizing it.
Matt Damon’s wife gets infected while on a trip to Beijing and slowly notices the symptoms when she arrives home. For some reason Matt is immune to the virus. He has to help keep his family safe and take all the precautions that he can in order to keep his family from falling ill.
Many countries become infected and soon there is a global epidemic where several millions of people die, resulting in a cure being made riskily by one lone lab worker.
This movie might seem like the typical worldly doom virus type, but believe me it’s not. The ending can in some ways be predictable, but the steps that come before that including the character development is very unique. I thought that the acting from all characters was fantastic and really gave you an idea of how badly people were affected by the end of the movie. The ending is bitter-sweet.
Ultimately, I’d give this movie a solid 3.5/5. It had its issues with angles and a few things were left out making me question how they got in between certain points. If you are a frequent doomsday movie watcher, you can probably assume what happens in between the blanks, but for those who don’t or can’t, no worries, by the end it will come back full circle.
I would definitely recommend anyone to watch this movie. I thought that it was well made and made me crave for another movie of this genre. So go watch it!
