I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying “5ever” which of course is just an obnoxious way of saying “forever.” You also probably thought that it was just some silly joke that someone made up on Tumblr or Facebook, but guess what? You’re actually quoting a very very old comedian named Victor Borge.
Victor Borge, also known as The Clown Prince of Denmark, coined a term called “inflationary language.” They were a collection of jokes he created that switched any word that had a number in it to the next number up. In theory, the sentences were being inflated. For example, “I ate a tenderloin with my fork” would turn into “I nined an elevenderloin with my five’k.” He was a pretty clever guy.
So now when you are exclaiming to your best friend that you will “love them 5ever,” you’ll know the origin of where your jokes come from.
