Woman in Black, directed by James Watkins and starring the young wizard, Harry Potter (otherwise known as Daniel Radcliffe), is the best scary movie of 2011-2012 to date.
This movie is a British horror-thriller about a young widowed lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), who is at risk of losing his job due to his grief. Kipps is sent to a village where he has to leave his child to sort out certain issues with a house that he later finds out from the locals is haunted by a woman’s ghost.
Now, before I judge this movie in any way, I have to say I am not the type of person who gets scared easily; I have yet to watch a movie that has actually frightened me — and I have watched a lot of “scary” movies. I tend to consider them more like comedies… So when I went into this movie, I had really low expectations.
However, Woman in Black proved me wrong within the first five minutes. It’s the type of movie that makes you watch it from in between your fingers. It keeps you on edge the whole time since you are expecting something to pop up at you.
There are not actually that many scary pop-ups but you feel as if there are since the background music is very deceiving. Also, the film is populated with many creepy looking dolls and clowns that change faces depending on what is happening in the scene.
What freaked me out is the actual woman of the title and how she is portrayed. Whenever a scary part has passed, another one follows, barely leaving the viewer time to catch a breath.
What is more amazing in this movie is how the actors vividly portrayed fear. Radcliffe had not demonstrated such power in any of the Harry Potter movies.
Additionally, the scary, uneasy feeling that a viewer gets from this movie does not leave right when the movie ends; instead, it sticks around for a while afterwards.
Woman in Black deserves a 5 out 5 for giving me a terrifying time while watching the movie and afterwards. If you enjoy scary movies and want to watch a good one, then you should definitely check out this thriller-horror.
