Girls swimming makes waves with last home meet

Last Friday was a Bollywood themed Senior Night for the girls swim team. The Niles North swim team had a duel home meet against Maine West to celebrate their seniors-most of who have been on the team for four years.

It was a victorious night for varsity and junior varsity alike as they both won against their duel opponent.

The junior varsity team had an overall score of 115 to the Warrior’s 60 points. The varsity team also dominated Maine West with an overall score of 106 to 79.

Niles North’s two varsity divers, Hawel and junior Anida Pekovic, kept spectators on the edge of their seats with their constantly improving dives. They finished in second and fourth place, respectively.

The evening win was slightly overshadowed by the emotional component the seniors and their teammates felt as the seniors were each honored with a short goodbye video and flowers.

The celebrated seniors include Sidrah Ahmed, Nicole Cadavillo, Ashley D’costa, Nicole Hawel, Marta Lemesh, Sabina Merka, Annie Modi, Stacey Moorehead, Cheri Sonderman, and Ana Vancea.

Ahmed commented on her feelings about the summation of her swimming experience at Niles North.

“I thought everything went really well. I didn’t necessarily think I would get emotional that night but then it all kind of hit me that my four years here are pretty much up. I couldn’t help but think back on all the times I didn’t want to come to practice and even times when I wanted to quit, but I’m beyond proud that I stuck with this. We’ve really become a family too and that’s something I’ll take with me.” (Ahmed says.)

Ahmed’s teammate and fellow senior D’costa also weighed in on the matter. “Although we’ve been recognized as seniors and we’ve had our senior night we’re still not done with the season, and I’m actually really happy about that. I think I have a newfound appreciation for these upcoming practices and meets because in the future I might miss it.”

It may have been the last home meet, but the girls aren’t hanging up their towels just yet! Make sure to attend the next girls swimming and diving meet on Oct. 24 at Glenbrook North High School.
