New take on an old tale: Hansel & Gretel wrestle with witches

New+take+on+an+old+tale%3A+Hansel+%26+Gretel+wrestle+with+witches

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is the latest of the many Hollywood remakes of classic fairy tales. Recent entries in the category include Snow White and the Huntsman, Red Riding Hood, and Beastly — with Jack & the Beanstalk on tap.

Children around the world know the horrific story of Hansel and Gretel, two orphans that stumble upon a house of sweets and fall into the trap of an evil witch that tries to eat them both. Fortunately, the two siblings were able to turn the tables around and trap the evil witch in her own oven.

Although the remake follows most of the original plot, the movie is not like the traditional story at all. First of all, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, is not a children’s movie. It’s full of outrageous violence, lots of blood, side characters being killed in various ways, weapons and much more.

The movie picks up 15 years after the ending of the classic folktale, when Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) are in their twenties and unbelievably skilled witch hunters. They end up in a small town where several kids have gone missing, and they wonder if it has anything to do with the upcoming “blood moon” and the powerful dark witch, Muriel (Famke Janssen). But that’s not all, the plot thickens when Gretel becomes the human sacrifice for the evil Muriel and Hansel will stop at nothing to make sure his sister is unharmed.

The movie is action- packed, which I enjoy. But if there were to be any improvements I would ask the director (Tommy Wirkola) to give the main characters some emotions. There was too little connection between the characters, which may have led some of the audience to dislike the film, accounting for a tepid box-office take. But if you are looking for a nonstop action movie, this epic remake of  the Brothers Grimm story is definitely the movie to see.
