The Class of 2013 regained their honor last night, winning the annual girls  Powderpuff football game 12-6 over the juniors. It was sweet senior revenge after the loss of the Spirit Stick at the fall pep assembly.

“ The juniors look good, but seniors have the upper hand because of their determination. They lost their respect at the pep assembly and the only way to regain it is to show the juniors who the upperclassmen are at Niles North,” senior Kayleen Enriquez said.

The game started with both teams pumped up for victory and tied at 0-0 until halftime when junior Molly Hampton scored a touchdown to take the lead, 6-0.

“The juniors are going to win. They have more athletes playing than the senior team,” junior Emre Erel said.

As it became apparent that the juniors were heading towards victory, many seniors in the  audience gave up and headed home, disappointment etched on their faces.

However, within the last minute of the game, the seniors managed to move the ball down the field, close enough to the end zone for a scoring opportunity.

With two seconds left on the clock and with a morale boost from the few faithful supporters remaining, senior Chinnel Williams scored a touchdown,  pulling the now-tied game into overtime.

In flag football overtime, both teams are given four chances to break the tie with a touchdown, and the first to score wins, unless the opposition returns the favor.

The crowd waited anxiously to see if either the junior or senior squads would make the first touchdown.

Within the first two attempts,  senior Alice Montague scored a touchdown.  The dispirited  juniors were unable to match the feat of her feet.

The night ended peacefully, however, as the juniors congratulated the victorious seniors and walked off the field, already planning for next year’s game.

Be on the lookout for a gallery, and video footage of the game.
