Mayor Lightfoot closes public areas to abide by Gov. Pritzker’s ruling

On March 26, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot closed trails, beaches, and city parks in order to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Lightfoot has also banned contact sports, according to The Chicago Tribune. The state has taken many other steps to combat the spread of the virus.  The biggest step they have taken is putting in Shelter-in-Place order in place combined with the closing of public areas.

As of April 10, the state of Illinois has over 16,400 cases of COVID-19, according to The New York Times.  In the entire country, there are around 483,000 cases.

The “stay at home” order will currently last through April 30, according to Newsweek, although this could be extended.  Not only does this mean residents must stay in their homes but it also means all nonessential businesses are closed.

According to NBC Chicago, these businesses are banks, grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, medical offices, and hardware stores.  Things like gyms, convention centers, entertainment venues, and dine-in restaurants have been closed, once again according to NBC Chicago.  Schools have also changed to remote learning to help with social isolation.

Although Illinoisans are supposed to stay in their homes as much as possible, They can still leave for things like going to the bank or getting groceries and employees of essential businesses can attend work.  You can also go on walks and go to any open parks or outdoor areas.

It is recommended to stay at least six feet away from all other people while out of your home to prevent yourself and others from contracting the virus.
