A eulogy for Club Penguin

A eulogy for Club Penguin

Club Penguin, the multiplayer website that has defined the childhood of many students at Niles North, is finally being shut down after 12 years of activity.

Many, including myself, started their internet career on the fantastical world of Club Penguin. You could dress up your penguin, decorate your igloo, and even take care of your pet puffles. This exciting virtual world included playing games in order to earn coins, having snowball fights with other penguins, and throwing parties in your igloo.

Some Niles North students shared their stories of their beloved childhood game.

“It’s tragic that Club Penguin is shutting down. I feel old. It’s the end of an era,” Lauren Rosenfeld, senior, said

“I always logged onto Club Penguin every day to make sure my animals were healthy, but I went on a trip for three weeks and forgot to check on my puffles. When I finally went back onto Club Penguin I cried all night long because I accidentally killed my puffles,” Kayla Stein, sophomore,  said.

The creators of the game cemented their legacy comically by finally flipping the famous iceberg. It has been an urban legend for the past 12 years that if enough penguins use a jackhammer on the iceberg, it would flip. To start off their final party they flipped the iceberg, and it turned into a dance floor, bringing excitement to all the old school Club Penguin fans who remember trying to get as many penguins as possible to come to help flip the iceberg.

This game will always be remembered as a staple of many people’s childhood. Hopefully, the creators’ next game will be just as fun and engaging to kids all over the world.
