North’s Co-Ed Cheerleading makes it to state

Over the past couple of years the Niles North co-ed cheerleading team has proven that they are just as athletic as any other team in the school. Contrary to popular belief, cheerleading is more than just standing on the sidelines.  Competitive cheerleading involves a combination of jumps, stunts, tumbling, dance and cheer. The team has qualified for state finals the past three years, placing in the top 10 last year, and placing 11th in the state this year.

“We always focus on making each performance better than the last,” co-captain senior Jaimie Albert said.

Although the team did not place top 10 this year, they have made great improvements from last season. The caliber of difficulty in the co-ed division has risen considerably in the past year, and the team is determined to place top 10 again next year.

The team underwent many difficulties this season, including the loss of two team members and other members suffering from multiple injuries, but were still able to remain strong. The Vikings placed fourth out of nine in the co-ed division at their first competition at Rolling Meadows, and placed second out of 16 at their second competition at Buffalo Grove. Both competitions were against many state qualifying teams. They have been dedicated to perfecting their routine since the beginning of the school year. Practices are held four days a week after school until 6:45 p.m., and the team is coached by Olivia Wolicki.

The way the team performs on the floor is not only a reflection of their strong work ethic but also of the bond the team has created.

“Our chemistry is honestly so amazing. We aren’t just teammates we’re literally family, and I can say that with my whole heart,” co-captain senior Caitlin Colleran said.

The 24 members of the team are all very close. Bonding takes place the night before every competition along with other outings year round.

“We get frustrated with each other sometimes like every other team, but everyone loves and supports each other no matter what. I would trust my life with anyone on the team. The whole program is one big family,” Albert said.
