2015 Golden Globes Predictions

2015+Golden+Globes+Predictions

The 2015 Golden Globes will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the third straight year on Sunday, January 11.  The Golden Globes officially kick off awards season and give us an idea of who will possibly go on to win bigger awards, like an Oscar.  With that in mind, lets take a look at who is nominated in the major categories and who will most likely take home the gold!

Movies

Best Picture – Drama

Nominees:

  •  Boyhood
  •  The Imitation Game
  •  Selma
  •  The Theory of Everything
  •  Foxcatcher

Who will win:  Boyhood

I think that Boyhood is going to take this award.  Boyhood has been generating awards buzz since it has premiered and has continued to gain momentum.  Boyhood also has a unique aspect to it that could help it win this award.  Boyhood was filmed over the course of 12 years so the audience not only got to see the cast age and delve deep into their characters, but also got to watch a story that felt real and hit close to home.

Best Picture – Comedy or Musical

Nominees:

  •  Birdman
  •  The Grand Budapest Hotel
  •  Into the Woods
  •  St. Vincent
  •  Pride

Who will win:  Birdman

I think that Birdman will take this award.  The film has been getting rave reviews and has the respect of many people in the industry.  The film is also about show business, which is a topic I can see the golden globe voters wanting to award.  However, I could see The Grand Budapest Hotel or Into the Woods being the potential spoilers in the category.

Best Director

Nominees:

  •  Ava DuVernay – Selma
  •  Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu – Birdman
  •  Wes Anderson – The Grand Budapest Hotel
  •  David Fincher – Gone Girl
  •  Richard Linklater – Boyhood

Who will win:  Richard Linklater

I think Richard Linklater will win this award for Boyhood.  His film is something that has never been done before and I could see the voters wanting to award Linklater for his 12 year commitment to making this movie.

Best Actor – Comedy or Musical

Nominees:

  •  Ralph Fiennes – The Grand Budapest Hotel
  •  Michael Keaton – Birdman
  •  Bill Murray – St. Vincent
  •  Christoph Waltz – Big Eyes
  •  Joaquin Phoenix – Inherent Vice

Who will win:  Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton is most likely going to to take this award.  Not only has Birdman gotten great reviews but Michael Keaton has gotten great reviews for his performance in the film.  However, with The Grand Budapest Hotel getting lots of nominations from the Golden Globes, could Ralph Fiennes pull off an upset?

Best Actress – Comedy or Musical

Nominees:

  •  Amy Adams – Big Eyes
  •  Emily Blunt – Into the Woods
  •  Helen Mirren – The Hundred-Foot Journey
  •  Julianne Moore – Maps to the Stars
  •  Quvenzhane Wallis – Annie

Who will win:  Julianne Moore

This category is wide open, with no clear front-runner for the win.  I could see any of these ladies taking home the gold.  While Amy Adams or Emily Blunt would seem to be the more obvious winners, I have a different theory.  Back in 2009, Kate Winslet was nominated in two acting categories and ended up winning both; Best Actress in Leading Role in a Motion Picture Drama for Revolutionary Road and Best Supporting Actress for The Reader.  That same year, Kate Winslet ended up winning an Oscar for her performance in The Reader.  This year, Julianne Moore ended up getting a nomination in both this category and in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama category and is in talks to win an Oscar this year for her drama performance in Still Alice.  I could very well see Julianne Moore getting a win in this category along to help strengthen her run to win an Oscar this year for her other performance in Still Alice.  With that said, I suspect Julianne Moore will win for Maps to the Stars.

Best Actor – Drama

Nominees:

  •  Steve Carell – Foxcatcher
  •  Benedict Cumberbatch – The Imitation Game
  •  Jake Gyllenhaal – Nightcrawler
  •  David Oyelowo – Selma
  •  Eddie Redmayne – The Theory of Everything

Who will win:  Eddie Redmayne

I think that Eddie Redmayne will take this award.  His portrayal of Stephen Hawking has won the hearts of audiences and I’m sure has also won the hearts of the Golden Globe voters.  I would be surprised if any of the other actors won this award.

Best Actress – Drama

Nominees:

  •  Jennifer Aniston – Cake
  •  Felicity Jones – The Theory of Everything
  •  Julianne Moore – Still Alice
  •  Rosamund Pike – Gone Girl
  •  Reese Witherspoon – Wild

Who will win:  Julianne Moore

As stated before, Julianne Moore is the front-runner to win the Best Actress Oscar for Still Alice, so expect her to see her win the Golden Globe for Still Alice as well.  Moore’s portrayal of a woman going through the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease in Still Alice is supposed to be heartbreaking and should have the support of the Golden Globe voters.

Best Supporting Actor

Nominees:

  •  Robert Duvall – The Judge
  •  Ethan Hawke – Boyhood
  •  Edward Norton – Birdman
  •  J.K. Simmons – Whiplash
  •  Mark Ruffalo – Foxcatcher

Who will win:  J.K. Simmons

J.K. Simmons will win this award.  His portrayal of an abusive music teacher in Whiplash was very intense and powerful and deserves to be awarded.  I could see Ethan Hawke taking the award in an upset, but I think Simmons has the momentum to easily win this award.

Best Supporting Actress

Nominees:

  •  Patricia Arquette – Boyhood
  •  Keira Knightly – The Imitation Game
  •  Meryl Streep – Into the Woods
  •  Emma Stone – Birdman
  •  Jessica Chastain – A Most Violent Year

Who will win:  Patricia Arquette

I suspect Patricia Arquette will win this award for her strong performance as the mom in Boyhood.  However, I could also see Meryl Streep winning the Golden Globe for her stunning performance in Into the Woods.  It seems the the Golden Globes enjoy awarding actors for musical performances (think Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables and Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls) so it wouldn’t be shocking if Streep ended up with the gold.

Best Screenplay

Nominees:

  •  Birdman
  •  The Grand Budapest Hotel
  •  The Imitation Game
  •  Gone Girl
  •  Boyhood

Who will win:  Birdman

I could see either Birdman or The Grand Budapest Hotel taking this award.  While The Imitation Game, Gone Girl and Boyhood all had excellent screenplays, I feel the Golden Globe voters will want to award either Boyhood or The Grand Budapest Hotel for their creativity.  If I had to choose one over the other, I’d say Birdman is more likely to win.

Best Animated Feature

Nominees:

  •  Big Hero 6
  •  The Book of Life
  •  The Boxtrolls
  •  How to Train Your Dragon 2
  •  The Lego Movie

Who will win:  The Lego Movie

The Lego Movie is going to win this award, no question.

Television

Best Television Series – Drama

Nominees:

  •  The Affair
  •  Downton Abbey
  •  Game of Thrones
  •  The Good Wife
  •  House of Cards

Who will win:  House of Cards

While I could see any of these TV shows win, I would say the competition is between House of Cards and Game of Thrones, with House of Cards with the slight edge.

Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama

Nominees:

  •  Clive Owen – The Knick
  •  Liev Schreiber – Ray Donovan
  •  Kevin Spacey – House of Cards
  •  James Spader – The Blacklist
  •  Dominic West – The Affair

Who will win:  Kevin Spacey

I could see any of these actors taking home the Golden Globe.  Three men have been nominated before (Schreiber, Spacey, Spader) and two are new to the category (Owen, West).  I think that Kevin Spacey will end up with the win this year after losing last year.  The Affair got a lot of important nominations, however, so I could see Dominic West being the potential spoiler.

Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama

Nominees:

  •  Claire Danes – Homeland
  •  Viola Davis – How to Get Away With Murder
  •  Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife
  •  Ruth Wilson – The Affair
  •  Robin Wright – House of Cards

Who will win:  Viola Davis

Robin Wright won in this category last year, Julianna Margulies won the Emmy for this category this year so who will one of these two win the Golden Globe this year?  Neither, probably.  I think the Golden Globe winner this year will be Viola Davis in How To Get Away With Murder.  Viola Davis has been nominated for a Golden Globe twice before for her film roles, but has never won.  This could be the chance for Golden Globe voters to finally give Davis a win, especially after not awarding her for her stunning performance in the 2012 film The Help.

Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical

Nominees:

  •  Girls
  •  Jane the Virgin
  •  Orange is the New Black
  •  Silicon Valley
  •  Transparent

Who will win:  Orange is the New Black

The Golden Globes have awarded this category to first time nominees the past two years, Girls in 2013 and Brooklyn Nine-Nine in 2014, so my guess is that this trend will continue this year with four of the five nominees in this category being first time nominees.  I think that the competition is between Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, with Orange is the New Black taking home the gold in the end.

Best Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical

Nominees:

  •  Louis C.K. – Louis
  •  Don Cheadle – House of Lies
  •  Ricky Gervais – Derek
  •  William H. Macy – Shameless
  •  Jeffrey Tambor – Transparent

Who will win:  Jeffrey Tambor

This is another category where I could see any one of the nominees winning.  While C.K. and Cheadle are previous nominees in this category, Gervais , Macy and Tambor are new nominees.  If I had to choose a winner I would say a newbie is going to take the gold this year.  With that said I think that Jeffrey Tambor will be the winner considering the strong recognition for Transparent this year.  However, it would be interesting if Ricky Gervais won, considering he is a former host of the Golden Globes.

Best Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical

Nominees:

  •  Lena Dunham – Girls
  •  Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie
  •  Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Veep
  •  Gina Rodriguez – Jane The Virgin
  •  Taylor Schilling – Orange is the New Black

Who will win:  Gina Rodriguez

Just like I think the Comedy or Musical series is going to come down to Jane the Virgin vs Orange is the New Black, I think this category is going to be between Gina Rodriguez and Taylor Schilling.  While  some may say Julia Louis-Dryfus will win because she won the Emmy in this cateogry this year, she also won the Emmy last year and ended up empty handed last year.  I think that Gina Rodriguez may have the edge over Taylor Schilling because she is a new nominee (Schilling was nominated last year for Orange is the New Black, but was put in the Drama category) for a series that has become a hit.

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees:

  •  Fargo
  •  The Missing
  •  The Normal Heart
  •  Olive Kitteridge
  •  True Detective

Who will win:  The Normal Heart

I think that The Normal Heart will win this award.  It has an Emmy win in this category behind it and is story about the aids epidemic.  With a powerful story and important wins behind it, The Normal Heart proves it has strong momentum going into the Golden Globes.  I can see True Detective being a potential spoiler, however.

Best Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees:

  •  Martin Freeman – Fargo
  •  Woody Harrelson – True Detective
  •  Matthew McConaughey – True Detective
  •  Mark Ruffalo – The Normal Heart
  •  Billy Bob Thorton – Fargo

Who will win:  Matthew McConaughey

With five nominees, we only see three television programs represented.  Although The Normal Heart may be the front-runner to win for best TV Movie, I don’t think Mark Ruffalo is going to win for The Normal Heart.  Instead, I see this race being between McConaughey or Harrelson for True Detective, with McConaughey more likely to take home the gold.

Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees:

  •  Maggie Gyllenhaal – The Honorable Woman
  •  Jessica Lange – American Horror Story: Freak Show
  •  Frances McDormand – Olive Kitteridge
  •  Fances O’Connor – The Missing
  •  Allison Tolman – Fargo

Who will win:  Frances McDormand

Here is another category where anyone could end up the winner.  While it would be easy to say that Jessica Lange will win for her last season of American Horror Story, the Golden Globe voters may think that Lange has had her time in the spotlight because she has been nominated four times for American Horror Story and will want to award somebody else.  Something tells me that Maggie Gyllenhaal or Frances McDormand could end up taking the gold, and my prediction is that Frances McDormand will turn out the winner.

Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees:

  •  Matt Bomer – The Normal Heart
  •  Alan Cumming – The Good Wife
  •  Colin Hanks – Fargo
  •  Bill Murray – Olive Kitteridge
  •  Jon Voight – Ray Donovan

Who will win:  Matt Bomer

I think that Matt Bomer is going to win this award.  While I haven’t seen The Normal Heart, Matt Bomer is supposed to of given a really powerful performance.  I also think the Golden Globe voters will want to give Bomer the win after he lost out at the Emmys.

Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Nominees:

  •  Uzo Aduba – Orange is the New Black
  •  Kathy Bates – American Horror Story: Freak Show
  •  Joanne Froggatt – Downton Abbey
  •  Allison Janney – Mom
  •  Michelle Monaghan – True Detective

Who will win:  Uzo Aduba

I think this race is between Aduba and Janney.  Both have Emmy wins behind them and both have solid shots to win.  I think Aduba is going to end up being the winner only because she is a first time nominee and Golden Globe voters may want to find some way to give Orange is the New Black at least one win.
